We find that
most people show an interest in attending a chiropractor for one
of two reasons:
1. Either you have a problem that is causing you pain, discomfort
or dysfunction that you believe can be helped by Chiropractic or...
2. You are fit and well and understand the importance of good spinal
function in the maintenance of health.
New Patient Procedures
1. Case History
- One of our Chiropractic Assistants will ask you to complete a
a pre consultation health history questionnaire. This allows us
to evaluate your current and previous health positions.
2. Consultation - After
completing the case history you will be shown to one of the consultation
rooms and your chiropractor will discuss your areas of concern with
you and may ask questions that focus on issues raised in your pre-consultation
history.
3. Examination - Your chiropractor will perform a series of tests and examinations to determine the cause of your problems, and whether your problems will benefit from Chiropractic care.
4. Radiographic Examination
- X-rays may be recommended by your Chiropractor after the examination.
They are taken for 3 main reasons. (1) To assist in determining
whether your spine is structurally sound, or whether it has any
pathology (disease process) present that may affect or hinder your
response to Chiropractic Care. (2) To gain information on the function
of your spine. (3) To identify any variation in your individual
anatomy of the joints and skeletal structure. This will assist us
in providing you with the most appropriate care for you.
5. Report of Findings
- Your chiropractor may need some time to correlate all the findings
before any treatment and recommendations for care are given. In
most cases this information will be given to you on your next visit.
This report will include explanation of your physical and x-ray
examination findings, recommendations and suggestions to assist
with your care. We invite you to bring your partner for that visit
to help them understand your particular needs.
In some cases
we may uncover some health issues that need to be addressed by you,
or by another health professional and we regularly work with health
professionals from a range of disciplines. We do not believe that
we have all the answers to all problems, however we will assist
you in prioritizing your health care, and in seeking the best help
for you at that point in time.
Remember, diagnosis can
never be made until a complete examination is performed, however
if you're suffering from the most common (see below) afflictions
that may be the result of poor spinal health, you may be able to
enjoy results from chiropractic treatment.
Headaches & Migraines
Many different headache
types have a spinal component. In some cases this is a very
significant factor in the pattern of headaches that you may
suffer from. eg. Cervicogenic Tension headaches. In other
cases the dysfunction of the upper neck may be a critical
trigger factor in setting off your headaches.
If you suffer from headaches it may
well be worth your effort in considering chiropractic as part
of your health care strategy.
A significant change
in headache patterns whether you have suffered from headaches
previously or not should always be appropriately investigated
to determine the source of the headaches.
A frequent and overlooked cause of headaches is the malfunction
of spinal joints bones in the neck and upper back. Many people
find relief and correction with chiropractic care.
If a thorough examination reveals reduced range of motion,
loss of normal spinal curves, mechanical restrictions, or
abnormal muscular tension chiropractic care should be considered.
After a complete explanation, you'll receive a care program
designed for your unique problem.

Neck Pain, Back Pain,
Lower Back Pain.

Pain originating
in the spine is not normal. Pain is the bodies way of telling
us that something is wrong. Many of our patients present to
us in significant pain and report having had lower levels
of pain over many weeks months or in some cases years. It
is often easier to asses long term pain patients before they
have severe or acute episodes of Neck pain, thoracic or low
back pain.
Low grade pain over
long periods of time are often the only indication that a
joint is not functioning well. Poor function of spinal joints
and for that matter any joint over a long period of
time may accelerate the degenerative wear process that is
commonly referred to as degenerative joint disease.
Other early warning
symptoms that are often ignored are poor posture, fatigue,
stiffness or even just the feeling that it doesn't feel right.
Listen to your body and act on early warning signs rather
than waiting for acute pain to scream at you.
Long term problems
with significant damage to the joint and soft tissue structures
can be difficult to manage.
If you have
tension, fatigue or pain in the neck it is time to get it
checked.

Backache
What is back pain?
Back problems can be caused by an extraordinarily wide range
of problems - some of them originating elsewhere in the body,
but with pain being transmitted (referred) to areas of the
back by the nervous system. Back pain is one of the most common
reasons people seek professional health care attention. It
is the symptom that prompts many patients who get chiropractic
care. The majority of backache sufferers complain of pain
in the lower back; the second most common site of discomfort
is the base of the neck.
Who suffers from back pain?
Virtually all human
beings are subject to back problems. The way we work, sit
and interact with our environment are critical factors in
the development of back pain in modern man. Sitting in particular
puts significant strain on the structures of the lower back.
Prolonged sitting also robs us of abdominal muscle strength
leading to weakness in the core muscles of the lower body.
Over time, back pain is all but inevitable however most of
it is treatable and when detected early is often correctable.
What can chiropractic do?
Chiropractors concern
themselves with the function of the human frame, particularly
the spine, and its effects on the rest of the body via the
nerve system.
Whether a problem
is new or old the chiropractors goal will be to establish
as near to normal joint function of your spine.
There are times
when a particular joint is beyond help, however we find clinically
that helping the other joints around such a problem assists
that patient in maintianing a higher level of function.
As a general rule
the earlier the intervention the easier a problem is to solve.
The chiropractor may also need your help in changing poor
habits, or exercising specific muscle groups or general exercise.
Chiropractors draw
upon a wealth of knowledge and experience with treating and
preventing back pain and back injuries. Spinal adjusting techniques
have been utilized over many centuries. Chiropractors have
developed a range of techniques over the last century to suit
a very broad range of patients from infants to the elderly.

Spinal Injury - Whiplash
What is whiplash?
Whiplash is most commonly associated with rear-end car collisions in which the heads of those in the front car are suddenly snapped back and forth by the impact. It is more accurately called cervical acceleration/deceleration (CAD) trauma or syndrome, which describes the rapid movements that can injure the vertebrae of the neck and the muscles and ligaments that support them.
Who suffers from whiplash?
Anyone can be subjected
to whiplash, even in a low-force car crash at speeds as low
as 10 kph. But injuries associated with whiplash can also
result from other mishaps in which the head is pushed or jerked
beyond its normal range of motion. Whiplash most commonly
causes serious and lingering neck pain, but there may also
be back pain, headaches
and dizziness. In as much bruising of the brain can sometimes
occur in auto accidents and similarly severe causes of whiplash,
some victims have experienced blurred vision, ringing in the
ears, nausea and numbness.
What can chiropractic do?
The sudden accident
that caused the whiplash in the first place may fade into
memory, but the physical and psychological damage of whiplash
can become chronic, eroding a victim's quality of life. Chiropractic
techniques and chiropractors' skills are particularly well-suited
to relieving the neck pain and other debilitating effects
of whiplash because they assist in
. restoring movement
lost after the accident,
. overcoming muscle
weakness and enhance muscle tone,
. speed recovery, and
. diminish chronic symptoms that can persist or recur over many years.
Repeated and effective chiropractic adjustments have proved successful for many thousands of patients. Chiropractic can, in many cases, significantly reduce patients' distress and allow them to return to their normal activities must faster.
